doorways
I am so excited to share these three songs by my band SOAR with the world. I wrote them a while ago - two of which before moving from San Francisco to Seattle four-ish years ago. “Threshold” and “On the Sunny Side” remind me of living in the Sunset district in San Francisco. I feel a sense of nostalgia when listening to them, remembering who and where I’ve been, and what experiences and ideas shaped me at the time. I am still very pleased with these songs and am excited for people to connect with them. “Washing My Hair” was written more recently - within the last 3 years. I wrote this song in a state of “pre-grief”, where I was thinking about what the feeling will be like to lose someone very dear to me and how time is finite. It’s a vulnerable and personal song that my bandmates met with a tenderness that I think can be heard on the recording.
For now “On the Sunny Side” is the only song available (on Bandcamp and Spotify), with the rest of the EP coming out on December 13th through Lost Sound Tapes. There will be a record release show in the Bay Area in December - I’ll share the info on that once it’s confirmed!
I’m a ghost I know how not to be seen
Quoting my brilliant bandmate Jenna Marx here - “I’m a guest in your house, I’m a ghost I know how not to be seen”. This song, “Ghost”, from SOAR’s album “soft dial tone” was very fitting for our experience at the Winslow House Project, where we had the privilege of spending a week writing new music, relearning SOAR ~classics~, eating delicious home-cooked meals (Thanks Gabe and Paige), watching Love Island, and playing a sweet brunch show with Cave Babies.
I had the best time, save for the ghostly encounters, with my dear friends Jenna, Mai and Rebs. I can’t even put it into words how special our bond and band is. I feel seen and understood in this collaborative project. I am just so grateful for these folks and in awe of the magic they bring to every song we write together. They are brilliant and I love them.
Thank you Kim of Winslow House Project for having us and for creating and sharing this amazing space with artists. If you’re interested in learning more about the Winslow House Project check out their website! The application period opens Sept 27th. There are four month long residencies a year in this beautiful historic house in Vallejo, California. I really recommend it!
